Accessibility at the
Community Boating Center
At the Community Boating Center, we believe time on the water should be accessible to everyone. Our mission is to remove barriers—physical, sensory, financial, or cultural—so that all people can experience the joy, confidence, and healing that come from being outdoors and on the Salish Sea.
Below is an overview of the accessibility features, equipment, and supports we offer across campus and in our programs.
Hearing Accessibility
Hearing Loops in Classrooms
Two of our classroom spaces are equipped with hearing loop systems generously supported by Spencer Audiology. Hearing loops transmit clear audio directly to telecoil-enabled hearing aids and cochlear implants, reducing background noise and making instruction and presentations easier to follow.
Live Captioning
Live captioning is available for presentations, trainings, and events upon request. Please let us know your captioning needs when registering for a class or meeting so we can schedule captioning services in advance.
Waterproof Communication Devices
For on-water programs, we provide waterproof walkie-talkies to support communication for participants who are Deaf or hard of hearing. These allow for clear, reliable communication between participants and staff while on the water.
Accessible Fleet & Boat Adaptations
Buildings & Grounds
Lift Access: A lift is available to reach the second floor of our Wheelhouse building.
Campus Terrain: Most areas of the CBC campus are on flat ground, though some outdoor paths and waterfront access points can be rocky. Our staff are happy to provide guidance or assistance navigating these areas.
Restrooms & Showers
We offer:
Two ADA-accessible restrooms with roll-in showers
Transfer benches and shower chairs available upon request
These facilities are designed to support comfort, dignity, and independence.
Lifts & Slings for Boat Transfers
CBC has slings and lift systems available to support safe transfers into and out of boats. Staff are trained in their use and are committed to working with each participant to ensure comfort, safety, and autonomy during the transfer process.
Accessible Fleet & Boat Adaptations
Kayak Outriggers (Stabilizers)
We maintain three kayak outrigger systems that add stability to kayaks. These are ideal for paddlers with balance concerns, new paddlers seeking more confidence, or anyone wanting a steadier riding experience.
Hansa 303 Sailboat
The Hansa 303 provides exceptional on-water stability and is engineered specifically for adaptive sailing. Its weighted keel, joystick steering, and comfortable seating make it an excellent option for sailors with limited mobility or those new to sailing.
VersaPaddle (Angle Oars)
We are proud to offer the VersaPaddle system, designed to keep kayakers as independent and active as possible.
The VersaPaddle:
Uses a mount to eliminate paddle weight and reduce joint strain
Can be used in a straight or downward-angled position
Supports paddlers with shoulder injuries, disabilities, amputations, or mobility limitations
Enables movement using a gentle rotary motion—similar to pedaling a bicycle with your hands
Can be operated with one hand or minimal force
This system makes kayaking more accessible and enjoyable for many paddlers.
