Accessibility at the
Community Boating Center
At the Community Boating Center, we believe time on the water should be accessible to everyone. Our mission is to remove barriers—physical, sensory, financial, or cultural—so that all people can experience the joy, confidence, and healing that come from being outdoors and on the Salish Sea.
Below is an overview of the accessibility features, equipment, and supports we offer across campus and in our programs.
Hearing Accessibility
Hearing Loops in Classrooms
Two of our classroom spaces are equipped with hearing loop systems generously supported by Spencer Audiology. Hearing loops transmit clear audio directly to telecoil-enabled hearing aids and cochlear implants, reducing background noise and making instruction and presentations easier to follow.
Live Captioning
Live captioning is available for presentations, trainings, and events upon request. Please let us know your captioning needs when registering for a class or meeting so we can schedule captioning services in advance.
Waterproof Communication Devices
For on-water programs, we provide waterproof walkie-talkies to support communication for participants who are Deaf or hard of hearing. These allow for clear, reliable communication between participants and staff while on the water.
Mobility
We aim to make our campus, facilities, and boating programs accessible for visitors using wheelchairs or other mobility aids.
Campus Access
Most areas of the Community Boating Center campus are on flat ground. Some waterfront areas may include gravel or rocky surfaces typical of a working harbor environment. Staff are available to assist with navigation if needed.
Building Access
A lift is available to reach the second floor of the Wheelhouse building.
Restrooms & Showers
Our facilities include:
Two ADA-accessible restrooms
Roll-in showers
Transfer benches and shower chairs available upon request
Boat Transfers
CBC has lift systems and transfer slings available to support safe boarding into boats. Our staff are trained to assist with transfers and work with participants to ensure comfort and safety.
Adaptive Boats
We offer adaptive equipment designed to support a range of mobility needs, including:
Kayak outriggers that add stability for paddlers
The Hansa 303 adaptive sailboat, which features joystick steering, supportive seating, and a weighted keel for stability
Blind & Low Vision
We work to support participants who are blind or have low vision so they can safely and confidently enjoy time on the water.
Orientation to Campus
Staff are available to provide orientation to the campus, docks, and equipment before programs begin.
Verbal Instruction
Instructors provide clear verbal descriptions and guidance during boating activities to support navigation and learning.
Boarding Assistance
Staff can assist with boat boarding and equipment setup as needed, helping participants safely transition from dock to boat.
Hands-On Learning
Boating programs include tactile and hands-on learning opportunities that allow participants to explore equipment and techniques through touch and practice.
Service Animals
Service animals are welcome at the Community Boating Center.
Service animals must remain under the control of their handler at all times and should follow all safety guidelines while on campus. We have dog life jackets available for use during your time at the Community Boating Center.
If you have questions about bringing a service animal to a program, please contact us prior to your visit.
Upper Body Strength Support
Kayak Outriggers (Stabilizers)
We maintain several kayak outrigger systems that add stability to kayaks. These stabilizers reduce tipping and provide extra balance support for new paddlers or those with mobility or strength limitations.
Hansa 303 Adaptive Sailboat
The Hansa 303 sailboat is designed specifically for adaptive sailing. Features include:
Weighted keel for exceptional stability
Joystick steering for simplified control
Comfortable seating for secure support
This boat allows sailors with a wide range of mobility levels to steer and sail with confidence.
Boat Transfers
CBC provides lift systems and slings to support safe transfers into and out of boats. Our trained staff work with participants to ensure transfers are safe, respectful, and comfortable.
Accessible Fleet & Boat Adaptations
Kayak Outriggers (Stabilizers)
We maintain three kayak outrigger systems that add stability to kayaks. These are ideal for paddlers with balance concerns, new paddlers seeking more confidence, or anyone wanting a steadier riding experience.
Hansa 303 Sailboat
The Hansa 303 provides exceptional on-water stability and is engineered specifically for adaptive sailing. Its weighted keel, joystick steering, and comfortable seating make it an excellent option for sailors with limited mobility or those new to sailing.
VersaPaddle (Angle Oars)
We are proud to offer the VersaPaddle system, designed to keep kayakers as independent and active as possible.
The VersaPaddle:
Uses a mount to eliminate paddle weight and reduce joint strain
Can be used in a straight or downward-angled position
Supports paddlers with shoulder injuries, disabilities, amputations, or mobility limitations
Enables movement using a gentle rotary motion—similar to pedaling a bicycle with your hands
Can be operated with one hand or minimal force
This system makes kayaking more accessible and enjoyable for many paddlers.
